Forest & Bird's South Canterbury Branch is a dedicated conservation group working to protect and restore the natural heritage of the South Canterbury region, spanning from the Rangitata to the Waitaki River. With approximately 300 members, the branch engages in a variety of hands-on conservation activities, including habitat restoration, pest control, and advocacy for native species and ecosystems.(Forest & Bird, Forest & Bird)
Key Projects and Achievements
-
Arowhenua Bush Restoration: A significant accomplishment of the branch is the acquisition and ongoing restoration of Arowhenua Bush near Temuka. This area represents one of the last remnants of lowland forest in Canterbury. The branch's efforts, spanning nearly five decades, have included removing invasive species, planting native flora, and establishing pest control measures to protect this vital ecosystem. -
Conway’s Bush Management: Since 1988, the branch has managed Conway’s Bush, a rare lowland forest patch donated by Stanley Conway. Regular care days are organized to remove invasive weeds and promote native biodiversity. (Forest & Bird)
-
Centennial Exhibition: In collaboration with the South Canterbury Museum, the branch hosted an exhibition celebrating 100 years of conservation work. The display highlighted local efforts, including habitat and species restoration projects, and aimed to inspire community involvement in environmental stewardship. (Avenues Magazine, Forest & Bird)
