Find a WuHoo At Home... Have you noticed Starlings in your garden? What do you know about them?
They get their name from the tiny white stars that gleam against its dark feathers. Able to imitate other bird calls. Spots are lost in the spring. In the breeding season both male and female starlings have yellow beaks.
It was introduced to help control unwanted insects, including ticks on cattle and sheep, and crop pests such as caterpillars and grasshoppers. However, starlings damage grapes and other fruit crops, and compete with tūī and bellbirds for the nectar of flax, rātā and other native plants.
