Find A WuHoo At Home... What do you know about Blackbirds? Can you find them in your garden?
Blackbirds sing after rain. Some say the song Sing a Song of Sixpence, from 1700s was a code used to recruit crew for the pirate Blackbeard. Payment was sixpence a day and a pocket of rye was code for whiskey. To settlers from Great Britain, familiar birds were a sentimental reminder of ‘home’. The first introductions were haphazard, private efforts. From the 1860s regional acclimatization societies began a more coordinated approach. Bringing birds on sailing ships was challenging, taking four months, through a range of climates and frequent rough seas. Most birds died en route.
