Preserving our heritage. Enhancing our future.
The Timaru Civic Trust is a volunteer-led charitable organisation committed to preserving and celebrating Timaru’s architectural heritage, urban character, and civic identity. Established in 1985 in response to the loss of significant historic buildings, the Trust advocates for quality urban design, supports heritage restoration, and fosters appreciation for Timaru’s built environment.
The Trust works to protect, restore, and promote the city’s unique architectural legacy—not as a static backdrop, but as a living part of Timaru’s identity and future. Their work includes:
-
Supporting and advocating for heritage restoration projects
-
Promoting thoughtful, people-centred urban design
-
Managing the Blue Plaques programme to celebrate historical and cultural landmarks
-
Engaging the public through education, events, and community advocacy
The Civic Trust believes that strong communities are shaped by thoughtful design and respect for heritage. Their efforts ensure that Timaru’s past informs a vibrant, well-designed future that reflects local pride and values.
