Ngaio, circa 1885, New Zealand, by Sarah Featon. Purchased 1919. Te Papa (1992-0035-2277/62)

Sarah's illustrations also include ngaio (Myoporum laetum) and kōkihi (Tetragonia trigyna). Ngaio produces small white flowers with purple markings. Insects visit its flowers, although the importance of particular pollinator species is not fully established. After fertilisation, ngaio produces fleshy purple fruit eaten by birds that help disperse its seeds.
